Bill of Lading layout changes: Here’s what you need to know
As part of the transition to a more standardized cloud-based documentation platform, we are updating the layout and formatting of our Bill of Lading (B/L) documents.
The changes affect how consolidated cargo information and Marks & Numbers are displayed, the positioning of text on B/L drafts, and the container type description shown on the B/L.
Consolidated cargo information and Marks & Numbers
When submitting your Shipping Instructions and requesting a consolidated print in the B/L layout, the display will depend on the information provided for the cargo items:
- Cargo information and Marks & Numbers are identical: The B/L will continue to be displayed in the existing consolidated format.
- Cargo information is identical, but Marks & Numbers differ: The Marks & Numbers will be displayed at container level on the B/L.
What do you need to do?
No action is required. Please continue to provide complete and accurate Cargo Item information and Marks & Numbers in your Shipping Instructions to ensure the information is displayed as expected.
Bill of Lading draft formatting and text positioning
B/L drafts generated through the new documentation platform will follow a standardized, system-defined format.
This means:
- B/L drafts will follow the standard format generated by the system.
- Manual centering or positioning of specific text at a particular location on the document will no longer be supported.
- All required B/L information should continue to be entered in the appropriate fields of the Shipping Instructions.
- The change relates only to the formatting and positioning of text. It does not affect the submission of required shipment information or the generation of the Bill of Lading.
No changes are required to the way you submit your Shipping Instructions. When reviewing your B/L draft, please take the standardized system-generated format into account. Where your internal processes or requirements with business partners rely on specific text positioning, these may need to be adjusted accordingly.
Container type descriptions on the Bill of Lading
In the legacy environment, the Container Type Description displayed on the B/L was based on the general container type, for example 45GP, corresponding to the description shown in the Booking Confirmation.
In the new cloud platform, the B/L currently displays the specific container size and type description, for example 45G1. This functionality is already live and does not impact customs processes, operational activities or other downstream processes.
Based on customer feedback, we are working on an enhancement to align the container type description on the B/L with the description provided in the Booking Confirmation.
No action is required from customers in connection with this change.
Please continue to submit complete and accurate information through the designated Shipping Instruction fields and review your B/L draft based on the standardized format.
